This festival-style event is a vibrant yet relaxed night with unrivalled views of Sydney Harbour. Enjoy live upbeat soul music and dance the night away to funk, jazz and reggae beats by the live DJ. You will receive an entree picnic box on arrival and various hot meal offerings from international food stalls.

*Every ticket sold supports the work of our science, horticulture and conservation projects.

    This is an outdoor event which will proceed in all weather. Fireworks are presented by City of Sydney. In the event that the fireworks are cancelled, the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust will not be held responsible or provide compensation. Please note this event is 18+ only.

Where is The Point located?

The Point takes place at Fleet Steps North, below Mrs Macquaries Chair. View Location Map. Guests will experience fantastic views of Farm Cove, the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge – the best location in Sydney to see the fireworks! 

Entry gates are located close to the Art Gallery of NSW and then guests walk approx. 800 metres to the event site.

How do I get to the event?

There are widespread road closures around the city and the Royal Botanic Gardens on New Year’s Eve. We highly recommend you use public transport. The closest train stations are Martin Place Train Station and St James Train Station. Additional bus and ferry services are available.

What are the arrival and exit timings? 
Entry to the event via the managed ticket checkpoint is 5.30pm. Guests must arrive at check point no later than 7pm to enjoy the full catering service.

The event finishes at 1am. Guests are encouraged to stay on site until the close of the event to avoid the large crowds exiting the Public Viewing Area at Mrs Macquaries Point.

Public Transport stations are also very congested immediately after the midnight fireworks. Remaining at the event until 1am will improve your experience of getting home.

What is included in the ticket price?
Your ticket includes exclusive access to stunning harbourside views of both the 9.00 pm and midnight fireworks, 6 course street-food style meal, live music, live DJ and a fortune teller.

What is included in the meal and how is this served?
Guests receive an entrée picnic hamper on arrival. There are 4 international street-food stalls serving hot meals that patrons can collect at their leisure. Two dessert options are also served along with tea nad coffee. Meal service times will be communicated to via a printed menu inside the entree hamper.
Please note there is no table service. The availability of food stall options will be dependent upon their popularity on the night.

I have a special dietary requirement - can this be accomodated?
Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. Please note that vegetarian / vegan / gluten free / dairy free / halal are accomodated within in the published menu. You need to purchase a 'vegetarian' or an 'other dietary' ticket to receive these entree hampers. These dietary types are also acomodated within the food stall offerings.

Dietary requirements MUST be submitted at the time of purchase to guarantee you recive the correct entree hamper. Dietary requests can also be submitted via an online survey by Friday 8 December 2017

What about beverages?
Drinks are not included in the ticket price. There are 2 cash bars in operation at the event selling a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. BYO drinks are not permitted.

Only people aged 18 years and over can drink or purchase alcoholic beverages. Photographic ID might be requested.

What are the seating arrangements?
The Point offers communal unreserved options with picnic tables and benches and cafe tables and chairs. There are also grassy areas for BYO rugs. You are encouraged to share a table and make some new friends!

What entertainment is at the event?
The Point is a festival style event offering patrons a relaxed atmosphere with a variety of  entertainment. There will be a live DJ playing laid back funk, soul & reggae influenced music, live upbeat-jazz style musicians and fortune tellers.
There are fireworks displays at 9pm and at midnight. Both displays are synchronised to music, which will be broadcast at the event. The full program of entertainment on the harbour can be viewed here

This event is strictly an over 18+ event.

Is this an accessible event?
Yes – the event is wheelchair accessible. For patrons with specific accessibility needs please refer to the Accessibility Fact Sheet

Are pass outs allowed once I have entered the event?
There are no pass outs from the event once a guest has entered the site. There are no exceptions.

The Point is a non-smoking site. There will be a designated smoking area, away from where patrons are seated.

When do ticket sales close?
Ticket sales will close 2.00 pm on 30 December 2016 unless sold out prior.

The Point has breath-taking views looking west towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. It is a popular ticketed vantage point which offers a less congested experience than the free public site at Mrs Macquaries Point.

About the site

  • Viewing area is accessible to wheelchair users.
  • Most suitable for people with good mobility or mild physical impairment who can move within large crowds when leaving site.
  • Long distance from the access gate to the event site – 900 metres or 12 - 15 minute walk.
  • Access roads and pathways are sealed and relatively flat but there is a steep slope down to the entrance along the seawall (see image gallery)
  • Mostly grassed areas but does have sealed flat viewing areas along the seawall.
  • Minimal shelter or shade in queuing or viewing areas – bring a hat, sunscreen, rain jacket or umbrella.

Site facilities

  • Wheelchair accessible but has some sloped grass viewing areas
  • Accessible toilet
  • Multiple food and beverage service areas. Drinks and alcohol for sale.
  • Entertainment consists of: a live DJ playing laid back tunes with a funk, soul and reggae influence; live upbeat jazz buskers; and a fortune teller.
  • Lighting – low level but adequate to allow safe egress
  • Onsite security and first aid


  • No seating in the queuing area. Those with specific requirements can register their needs via our online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XZM95R2
  • Seating at the event is unreserved and fills on first in basis. A variety of seating is available ranging from backless picnic tables, café style tables and chairs and mats on the lawn.

Food and Beverage

  • Service counter heights are wheelchair accessible. Food operators can provide assistance if required.
  • Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. There is a Special Dietary Requirement question to complete when purchasing tickets. Special meal requirements MUST be submitted by Monday 12 December. ‘Special Dietary Meal’ ticket purchasers will be contacted with a reminder of the deadline and further details for submitting meal requests prior to the event

Opening times

  • Gates are only open between 5.30pm - 7pm on New Year’s Eve.
  • Entry via Art Gallery Road only. There is no access through the Royal Botanic Garden.

Getting there:
Public transport

  • Public transport is the best way to get around on New Year’s Eve.
  • St James Station is the closest station. It is 1.6 kilometre or 23 minute walk to The Point. There is a lift at the Elizabeth Street entrance at Hyde Park.
  • At Circular Quay station, trains will not stop between 6pm and 1am

  • Driving is not recommended. Road closures and clearways are in place on New Year’s Eve.
  • Limited accessible parking on Art Gallery Road for eligible permit holders only. Vehicle movement restrictions after the midnight fireworks, so long delays should be expected.
  • The Domain Car Park is nearest alternative public car park and is 1.1 kilometres from The Point.
  • It’s is outside the New Year’s Eve road closures and open until 3am on the night. Pre-booking online is recommended.
  • The car park has 2 lifts. Use the lift closest to the Art Gallery of NSW.
  • Vehicle clearance height in the car park is low at 1.9 metres.
