Q: Where is The Point located?
A: The Point is held at Fleet Steps North. View Location Map 
Guests will experience uninterrupted views of Farm Cove, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge – the best location in Sydney to see the fireworks! 

Q: What is included in the ticket price?
A: Your ticket to The Point includes: 
•    Exclusive access to stunning views at Mrs Macquaries Point
•    Entrée picnic box on arrival and a bottle of water
•    Hot street-food style mains collected from international styled food stalls
•    Dessert, tea and espresso
•    Licensed cash bars to purchase all beverages. 
•    Live DJ and live musicians

Drinks are NOT included. Licensed bars with beverages for purchase are located in the event site.

Q: What is the food catering and how is this served?
A:  Patrons will collect one entrée box per ticket holder at the entrance to the event site. The box contains picnic style cold food options.

The various offerings from international style food stalls will operate from 6.00 pm to 9.00 pm. To allow our guests flexibility of choice, access to the food stalls will operate on grab and go basis. This means that guests can visit a stall more than once, but we cannot guarantee availability of all menu choices over the course of the night, subject to the popularity of selections on the night. All stalls will offer a vegetarian option.

The dessert and tea/coffee stalls will operate after the 9.00 pm fireworks. Additional snacks are available at the bar for purchase if required.

Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. Special meal requirements MUST be submitted  by Monday 12 December 2016 via an online survey provided in an event information email.

Q: Is there any entertainment at the event?
A: The Point is a festival style event offering patrons a relaxed atmosphere with a variety of live entertainment. There will be a live DJ playing laid back funk, soul & reggae influenced music, live upbeat-jazz style musicians and fortune tellers. 

Q: What are the seating arrangements?
A: There will be a range of unreserved seating options available. Furniture will range from cafe style tables and chairs; communal picnic tables with bench seating; and picnic style rugs. You may bring your own rug to enjoy sitting on grassed areas. 

Q: What time are the fireworks?
A: There are two fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve – 9.00 pm and at midnight. Both displays are synchronised to music which is broadcasted at the event. The fireworks are provided by the City of Sydney and are dependent on safe weather conditions. In the event that the fireworks are cancelled, the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust will not be held responsible or provide compensation.

A: Ticket sales will close 2.00 pm on 30 December 2016 unless SOLD OUT prior.

Entry Information

Q: How do I access the event?
A: The Point is located at Fleet Steps North. Entry is via a security check point on Art Gallery Road (100 m north of the Art Gallery of NSW). Guests then walk about 400 m to the event site. View Location Map 

Q: What is the best way to get to The Point?
A: There are widespread road closures around the city and Garden on New Year’s Eve.  We highly recommend you use public transport and leave the car at home. The closest train stations are: 
•    Martin Place Train Station: 1 km from the managed access entry gate adjacent to the Art Gallery of NSW, with a further 800 m to the event site (1.8 km). 
•    St James Train Station: 900 m to the managed access gate entry adjacent to the Art Gallery of NSW and a further 800 m down to the viewing area (1.7 km).

Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Entry to the event is via the entry check point from 5.30 pm. There is no need to arrive earlier than the gates opening, as only valid ticket holders will be allowed entry to the site. Please note all guests must arrive at the security check point no later than 7.30 pm. There will be no further admissions after this time. Please allow additional travel time on New Year’s Eve.

Q: What time does the event end?
The event finishes at 1.00 am. Guests are encouraged to stay on site until the close of the event to avoid the large crowds exiting the Public Viewing Area at Mrs Macquaries Point. Please note that Public Transport stations are also very congested immediately after the midnight fireworks. Remaining at the event until 1am will improve your experience of getting home.  

Exit is via Art Gallery Road (the same as entry).

Q: What if I am attending with a group of people?
A: It is best to enter the event together as a group if you have made a group booking.

Q: Are pass outs allowed once I have entered the event?
A: No – there are no pass outs from the event once a guest has entered the site. There are no exceptions. Please note there is no entry prior to 5.30pm and all patrons must arrive by 7.30 pm

Q: Can I bring children?
A: No. This event is an over 18s event. You must be over 18 years of age to purchase a ticket. Proof of age ID will be required at entry.

Q: Can I bring alcohol?
A: No – this event is a licensed event, and a range of alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for cash sale at our bar on site. Please note that bag checks will be conducted by security and is a condition of entry.

Q: Is there a dress code?
A: Smart casual attire and comfortable footwear is suggested (the event site is grass terrain – high heels are not recommended!) along with a jacket if it becomes cool in the evening.

Q: What will not be permitted into the event?
A: No BYO drinks (including alcohol and water); sparklers; illegal substances; weapons; and glass and aerosol cans. Large golf umbrellas will not be permitted. Smaller umbrellas no more than 50 cm are permissible. Restricted items may be confiscated and entry refused to any persons not complying with conditions of entry. Please note all ticket holders will be subject to a bag check at the entry check point.


Q: Are there ATM or Credit Card facilities at the event?
A: We recommend you bring cash as there are no ATM facilities on site.

Q: Is this an accessible event?
A: Yes – the event is wheelchair accessible.

Q: Are there toilets on site?
A: Yes – there are toilets including an accessible toilet for ticket holders’ exclusive use.

Q: How can I access the site?

A: Due to extensive road closures and high pedestrian traffic in the precinct, public transport is the best and most convenient option for spectators to get to the event.

There is no access to The Point through the Royal Botanic Garden. Access is via a managed access gate on Art Gallery Road ONLY, 100 m north of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Q: Are there long distances to negotiate?
A:  The event site is approximately 900 m or 14 minute walk from the entry gate on Art Gallery Road. Pathways are sealed and relatively flat but there is a moderately steep slope to negotiate from Mrs Macquaries Road down to the site entry.

Conditions of Entry
Please remember you are entering the Royal Botanic Garden & Domain – a sensitive environment. Please consider the safety of other patrons. All patrons entering the site will be subject to security searches and must show valid identification and tickets. The following items will not be allowed to be brought into the event site:
•    No BYO beverages including alcohol and water
•    No glass
•    No sparklers, party poppers or candles
•    No umbrellas (personal umbrellas under 50 cm are allowed)

Pass outs:
There are no pass outs. Please note there is no entry prior to 6.30pm and all patrons must arrive by 8.00pm

The Point is a non-smoking site. There will be a designated smoking area, away from where patrons are seated.

Responsible Service of Alcohol:
Alcohol sales are subject to Responsible Service of Alcohol and Harm Minimisation Practices which will be strictly enforced. 
•    Any patrons under the influence of alcohol on arrival will be refused entry.
•    Only people aged 18 and over are able to drink and purchase alcoholic beverages. Patrons are also strictly prohibited from supplying alcohol to minors onsite (i.e. persons under 18 years of age).
•    You may be required to present photographic ID to security and bar staff in order to purchase alcohol. The following ID types are the only acceptable forms of identification:
- NSW Transport Drivers Licence or Interstate Drivers Licence
- Overseas Driver Licences with photo ID incorporated
- Passport (NO Photocopies)
- NSW RTA Photo Card www.olgr.nsw.gov.au/liquor_info_photo_card.asp 
- Interstate Proof of Age cards

News Year’s Eve at the Royal Botanic Garden & Domain is a Waste Wise Event
The Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust is committed to achieving best practice in environmental management. All packaging of food and drinks sold on trust land for NYE is biodegradable or recyclable. We cannot recycle containers if the recycle bins have general waste in them. If contaminated, the recycle station will be sent to landfill so please be diligent with waste disposal.

The Point has breath-taking views looking west towards the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House. It is a popular ticketed vantage point which offers a less congested experience than the free public site at Mrs Macquaries Point.

About the site

  • Viewing area is accessible to wheelchair users.
  • Most suitable for people with good mobility or mild physical impairment who can move within large crowds when leaving site.
  • Long distance from the access gate to the event site – 900 metres or 12 - 15 minute walk.
  • Access roads and pathways are sealed and relatively flat but there is a steep slope down to the entrance along the seawall (see image gallery)
  • Mostly grassed areas but does have sealed flat viewing areas along the seawall.
  • Minimal shelter or shade in queuing or viewing areas – bring a hat, sunscreen, rain jacket or umbrella.

Site facilities

  • Wheelchair accessible but has some sloped grass viewing areas
  • Accessible toilet
  • Multiple food and beverage service areas. Drinks and alcohol for sale.
  • Entertainment consists of: a live DJ playing laid back tunes with a funk, soul and reggae influence; live upbeat jazz buskers; and a fortune teller.
  • Lighting – low level but adequate to allow safe egress

  • Seating at the event is unreserved and fills on first in basis. A variety of seating is available ranging from backless picnic tables, café style tables and chairs and mats on the lawn.

Food and Beverage

  • Service counter heights are wheelchair accessible. Food operators can provide assistance if required.
  • Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. There is a Special Dietary Requirement question to complete when purchasing tickets. Special meal requirements MUST be submitted by Monday 12 December. ‘Special Dietary Meal’ ticket purchasers will be contacted with a reminder of the deadline and further details for submitting meal requests prior to the event

Opening times

  • Gates are only open between 5.30pm - 7pm on New Year’s Eve.
  • Entry via Art Gallery Road only. There is no access through the Royal Botanic Garden.

Getting there:
Public transport

  • Public transport is the best way to get around on New Year’s Eve.
  • St James Station is the closest station. It is 1.6 kilometre or 23 minute walk to The Point. There is a lift at the Elizabeth Street entrance at Hyde Park.
  • At Circular Quay station, trains will not stop between 6pm and 1am

  • Driving is not recommended. Road closures and clearways are in place on New Year’s Eve.
  • Limited accessible parking on Art Gallery Road for eligible permit holders only. Vehicle movement restrictions after the midnight fireworks, so long delays should be expected.
  • The Domain Car Park is nearest alternative public car park and is 1.1 kilometres from The Point.
  • It’s is outside the New Year’s Eve road closures and open until 3am on the night. Pre-booking online is recommended.
  • The car park has 2 lifts. Use the lift closest to the Art Gallery of NSW.
  • Vehicle clearance height in the car park is low at 1.9 metres.
