Q: Where is Lawn with The View located?
A: Lawn with the View is held at Bennelong Lawn, an intimate elevated lawn area overlooking the Sydney Opera House inside the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. View Location Map

Q: What meal is included?
A: Your ticket includes entry and a gourmet picnic hamper & a bottle of water. Beverages are not included but a licensed cash bar for purchasing drinks is located on the event site. Every ticket purchased supports the work of the Royal Botanic Garden’s science, horticulture and conservation projects. View menu.

Q: Is there any entertainment at the event?
A: Lawn with the View is a relaxed picnic style event with no formal entertainment program. 

Q: What time are the fireworks?
A: There are two fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve: 9.00 pm and at midnight. Both displays are synchronised to music which is broadcast at the event. The fireworks are provided by the City of Sydney. In the event that the fireworks are cancelled, the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust will not be held responsible or provide compensation.

Q: What time does the event start and finish?
A: Gates to the event open at 7.00 pm. Last event entry is at 8.30 pm. Any guests who have not entered by this time will not gain entry to the event.

The event finishes at 12.30 am (with last drinks at midnight) when all guests are asked to leave. Exit is via Macquarie Street (same as entry).

Q: What are the seating arrangements?
A: Lawn with the View is a picnic style event and fills on a first in basis. Bring your picnic blanket along. No chairs are permitted. You are welcome to bring strollers, but we will ask you to move them to the side to ensure all guests enjoy the spectacular views. Please refer to our accessibility fact sheet for people with disability or specific needs for further details.

Q: Can I bring children to Lawn with the View?
A: Yes - Lawn with the View is an all-ages event. There is a licensed bar at the event and only ticket holders over the age of 18 years will be permitted to purchase alcoholic beverages. Photo ID must be shown. As Lawn with the View is a family friendly event, you may wish to bring transportable games to keep children and infants entertained between the 9.00 pm and midnight fireworks. Everyone entering the site regardless of age must have a ticket. There are no concessions for children or infants.

Q: Can I bring additional food to site?
A: No. Additional snacks are available at the bar if required.

Q: What is the approximate cost of beverages at the event?
A: Lawn With The View is a licensed event. A range of alcohol and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for sale. Please view Lawn With the View bar list which will be available around November 2016. Water stations are available for refilling water bottles provided.

Q: When do ticket sales close?
A: Ticket sales will close at 2.00 pm on the 30 December 2016 unless sold out prior.

Q: How do I access Lawn with the View?

A: Lawn with the View is held at Bennelong Lawn at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. Entry to the event is via Gate B on Macquarie Street and then Government House Gate (near the Conservatorium of Music). View Location Map
 
Q: What is the best way to get to Lawn with the View?

A: There are widespread road closures around the city and Garden on New Year’s Eve.  We highly recommend you use public transport and leave the car at home. The closest train stations are: 
•    Martin Place Train Station: 750m to the managed access entry gate on Macquarie Street.
•    St James Train Station: 900 m to the managed access gate entry on Macquarie Street.

Q: What time should I arrive?
A: Entry to Lawn with the View opens at 7.00 pm. Please allow additional travel time on New Year’s Eve. There is no need to arrive prior to the gates opening as only ticket holders will be allowed entry to the site. Please note all guests must enter the site by 8.30 pm. There will be no further admissions after this time.

Q: What should I bring?
A: Bring cash (no ATM facilities onsite), warm clothing, comfortable shoes and a picnic rug to sit on. Beverages are available for sale at the event site.

Q: What can I not bring into the event?
A: No BYO drinks including alcohol and water, sparklers, illegal substances, weapons, glass and aerosol cans. Large golf umbrellas will not be permitted. Smaller umbrellas no more than 50 cm are permissible. Restricted items may be confiscated and entry refused to any persons not complying with conditions of entry. Please note all ticket holders will be subject to a bag check at the entry check point. The Royal Botanic Gardens &

Domain Trust reserves the right to confiscate any restricted items and/or refuse entry to any persons not complying with Conditions of Entry. Opened beverages (including water) will be confiscated at the bag check.

Q: Can I get a pass-out once I have entered the Lawn with the View event?
A: No – there are no pass-outs from the site once a ticket holder has entered. There will not be any exceptions.

Q: I have a special dietary requirement. What should I do?
A: Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. Special meal requirements MUST be submitted  by Monday 12 December 2016 via an online survey provided in an event information email.  

FACILITIES AT THE EVENT
Q: Is there an ATM or Credit Card Facilities on site?

A: We recommend you bring cash onsite to Lawn with the View. Please note there are no ATM facilities on site. If you need to visit an ATM you MUST do this prior to entering the Lawn with the View event site.

Q: Is there a dress code for the Lawn with the View event?
A: Guests are advised to wear comfortable clothing and footwear (the event site is grass terrain – high heels do sink into the grass!). Guests are also advised to bring warmer clothing as it can become quite cool at night.

Q: Are there toilets on site?
A: Yes there are toilets including an accessible toilet, for ticket holders’ exclusive use.

Q: Is Lawn with the View a wheelchair accessible event?
A: Yes access to Lawn with the View is wheelchair accessible but it is a picnic style event and the majority of the site is grass terrain. Movement around the site can be restricted as spectators are scattered throughout the lawn. Aisle ways are maintained where possible to allow guests to move from viewing areas to amenities/facilities. Designated viewing zones are available for guests in wheelchairs but the locations are pre-determined so as not to obstruct the views of other patrons seated on rugs.

Q: Are there long distances to negotiate?
A:  There is a 500 – 600 m walk from the access gate at Macquarie Street to the event site, but the pathway is sealed and relatively flat. Once at Bennelong Lawn the site is grass terrain with limited hard surfaces.

Conditions of Entry
Please remember you are entering the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and Domain – a sensitive environment. Please consider the safety of other patrons. All patrons entering the site will be subject to security searches and must show valid identification and tickets. The following items will not be allowed to be brought into the event site:
•    No BYO beverages including alcohol and water
•    No glass
•    No sparklers, party poppers or candles
•    No umbrellas (personal umbrellas under 50 cm are allowed)
•    No chairs – picnic rug seating only

Pass Outs: No pass outs will be allowed

Smoking:  
Lawn with the View is a non-smoking site. There will be a designated smoking area, away from where patrons are seated.

Responsible Service of Alcohol:
Alcohol sales are subject to Responsible Service of Alcohol and Harm Minimisation Practices which will be strictly enforced. 
•    Any patrons under the influence of alcohol on arrival will be refused entry.
•    Only people aged 18 and over are able to drink and purchase alcoholic beverages. Patrons are also strictly prohibited from supplying alcohol to minors onsite (i.e. persons under 18 years of age).
•    You may be required to present photographic ID to security and bar staff in order to purchase alcohol. The following ID types are the only acceptable forms of identification:
- NSW Transport Drivers Licence or Interstate Drivers Licence
- Overseas Driver Licences with photo ID incorporated
- Passport (NO Photocopies)
- NSW RTA Photo Card www.olgr.nsw.gov.au/liquor_info_photo_card.asp 
- Interstate Proof of Age cards

News Year’s Eve at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney & Domain is a Waste Wise Event
The Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust is committed to achieving best practice in environmental management. All packaging of food and drinks sold on trust land for NYE is biodegradable or recyclable. We cannot recycle containers if the recycle bins have general waste in them. If contaminated, the recycle station will be sent to landfill so please be diligent with waste disposal.

Lawn with the View is an extremely popular family ticketed event on an elevated site adjacent to the Sydney Opera House.

About the site

  • Picnic style event which is wheelchair accessible but movement is restricted as guests are scattered on rugs across the lawn.
  • Aisle ways are in place to allow movement from viewing areas to amenities/facilities.
  • Mostly grassed site with limited hard sealed viewing areas.
  • 600 metres or 10 minute walk from security gate on Macquarie Street to the event site. Pathways are sealed and relatively flat.
  • Minimal shelter or shade protection in queuing or viewing areas – bring a hat, sunscreen, rain jacket or umbrella.

Seating

  • No seating in the queuing area. Those with specific requirements can register their needs via our online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XZM95R2 or by contacting nye.disability@rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au in advance.
  • Patrons can bring own picnic blanket but no BYO chairs allowed
  • General viewing areas are unreserved and fill on first in basis
  • Guests with limited mobility who cannot sit on the lawn can pre-register for access to seating in the designated viewing area only.
  • Designated accessible viewing zones are in fixed locations chairs do not obstruct views for other patrons seated on rugs.

Food and Beverage

  • No BYO food or alcohol. Guests collect a picnic box on arrival.
  • Specific dietary requirements will be accommodated where possible. There is a Special Dietary Requirement question to complete when purchasing tickets. Special meal requirements MUST be submitted by Monday 12 December. ‘Special Dietary Meal’ ticket purchasers will be contacted with a reminder of the deadline and further details for submitting meal requests prior to the event.

Opening times

  • Security checkpoint gate is only open between 7.00 pm – 8.30 pm only on New Year’s Eve.
  • Entry is via Gate B off Macquarie Street, near the Conservatorium of Music, then enter Government House Gate.
  • There is no access through the Royal Botanic Garden.

Getting there:
Public transport

  • Public transport is the best way to get around on New Year’s Eve.

  • Martin Place Station is 1.2 kilometres from Lawn with the View.
  • There is a lift between Philip and Macquarie streets.
  • Saint James Train Station 1.5 kilometres from Lawn with the View.
  • There is a lift at the Elizabeth Street entrance at Hyde Park.
  • At Circular Quay station, trains will not stop between 6pm and 1am


Driving

  • Driving is not recommended. Road closures and clearways are in place on New Year’s Eve.
  • Limited accessible parking on Art Gallery Road for eligible permit holders only. Vehicle movement restrictions after the midnight fireworks, so long delays should be expected.
  • The Domain Car Park is nearest alternative public car park and is 1.6 kilometres from Lawn with the View.
  • It’s is outside the New Year’s Eve road closures and open until 3am on the night. Pre-booking online is recommended.
  • The car park has 2 lifts. Use the lift closest to the Art Gallery of NSW.
  • Vehicle clearance height in the car park is low at 1.9 metres.
